We reached the day of the final defense, a moment etched in my memory. Customarily, the external examiner acts as the "judge" while the student is the "defender," but what happened that day was a departure from the script. The internal examiner later whispered to me in amazement: "For a few seconds, I felt the roles had reversed! The student presented his findings with such confidence and scientific precision that the external examiner looked like a pupil asking his professor to learn from him." It was not a PhD defense; it was a "master lecture" delivered by a young man who had not yet turned thirty.

I never needed to review his results with exaggerated scrutiny—not out of negligence on my part, but because I was confident his "mental engine" had checked every possibility before the paper reached my desk. He returned to his home country to assume his natural position as a distinguished bioengineer, leaving behind an indelible mark in Dublin and a lasting memory of a student who harnessed science to serve the mind—not immigration, nor muscle.
