An expatriate scientist, Emeritus Professor of Biochemical Engineering at University College Dublin, and previously Professor at the University of Birmingham. President of the Network of Iraqi Scientists Abroad (NISA), and former Honorary Advisor to the President of the Republic of Iraq and the Minister of Higher Education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the College of Science, University of Baghdad, his PhD in Radiation Genetics from the University of London, and his DSc from the National University of Ireland.

His experience includes holding numerous scientific and academic positions, serving as editor for several scientific journals and books, chairing European research funding committees, serving as scientific advisor to medical production institutions and companies, as an expert for UNESCO, and as a visiting professor at several international universities.

He is considered the first to discover programmed cell death in cultured cells, and holds priority in genetic life extension of cells producing medical materials. He is among the first to successfully produce red blood cells artificially outside the body, and among those who successfully cultured and engineered knee cartilage. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the biopharmaceutical industry in the United Kingdom.

He has received numerous awards and grants, including the Donald Medal, the Astellas Foundation Award, recognition from the Science Foundation Ireland, and an honorary doctorate. He has over 500 original research papers, book chapters, reviews, and patents, a series of books on genetic engineering and cell culture, and several other books and articles on education in Iraq and the Arab world.
